The adage, how long is a piece of string?, rings in my ears when I’m asked this question about copywriting fees. A piercing nonchalance that would make any serious Googler roll their eyes and exit this blog—and trust when I say, the irony isn’t lost on me!
Much like any provider in the service industry, copywriting fees vary depending on who’s penning the prose. So, I did a sprinkling of research into average website copywriting cost, propelled by curiosity and sustained by sheer nosiness.
A copywriting cherub in the UK charges around $1,800 aud per page, while an AU agency that pushes back against poetry starts at $2,500 aud per page. Freelancers who can meet sharp deadlines occasionally opt for hourly rates (starting at $100 aud/hour, minimum)—however project-based quotes are preferred by both writers and their brand-wielding clients. A collection of wordsmithing sommeliers kick off and complete copywriting projects around the $15,000 mark and if you traipse through the trenches of Fiverr: you can buy a blog for, well, $5.
(Will it be written by AI? Probably. Will it be plagued by plagiarism? Most likely. Does that mean it’ll hurt your Google ranking [and potentially your hip pocket if you’re taken to court for stealing someone else’s work…?], yes. But that’s another blog post entirely.)
Maths isn’t my strongest suit, but we don’t need to channel the Greek philosopher Pythagoras to recognise that one, strongly positioned page of website copywriting should cost between $800 and $2,000 aud. Which is why I like to focus on the worth (or return-on-investment) found in a copywriting fee, rather than the nitty gritty per-page breakdown of website copywriting costs.
On one end of the business-owning spectrum, there’s baby brands cradled in the arms of budding entrepreneurs. Perhaps they sport a pre-designed logo suite and colour palette, reserving funds to splash out on brand photography. Processes are in their infancy and invoicing is still in manual mode. I say all of this with tenderness and love—because we’ve all been there.
We were all baby brand-owners once, with limited funds and a DIY-mindset. Bursting with energy and ideas, we took the business owning world by storm—with Google searches like ‘copywriting fees’ done out of fear, rather than research.
So, to find out that the website copywriting cost for a single homepage will set you back $1k can stall the momentum—causing you to bank words for a later date. And as a copywriter with nearly a decade of making people’s passion profitable, this is okay.
Because once you reach the point where sales are stalling and you’re on the brink of quitting your soul-sapping 9-5 to make your dreams your full time business: copywriting fees won’t seem so scary.
‘How much does copywriting cost?’ will be asked from a place of curiosity, rather than awkwardness. You’ll request a payment plan with confidence and know that your investment will bring in returns year on year.
Whether you start with a single page of copywriting (which I strongly advocate for—some incredible, conversion-centric website copywriting is always better than none), or freefall into an entire website project: it’s going to be worth it.
✨ Copywriting fees aside, quality copywriting lasts for years. It has a lifespan well beyond brand photography and tends to outlast the inevitable colour palette refresh. Website copywriting is an investment that LASTS.
💡 Website copywriting is brilliant at weeding out the wannabes from wonderous, money-forward clients who align with everything you stand for. It results in big “YES” moments from your ideal audience. And this, of course, translates to more sales.
🧩 And in a lot of cases: copywriting is the missing piece to your profit puzzle. Unless you’ve chosen writing as a career, penning word-filled wonder often falls to the very bottom of the to-do list. In fact, I often find it in a wastebin underneath a half-eaten banana, growing a pungent strain of mould that pierces the senses and gives writing even more of a bad rap.
I have a track record of writing copy that pulls in leads, gets websites ranked on page one of Google and makes. a. sale. With years (and I mean years) of fusing reader psychology with literary techniques and folding in elements of storytelling—I deeply understand the importance of copywriting. The critical (and oh-so profitable) role it plays in the legitimacy, continuity and wholehearted success of a business.
Copywriting is buyer-confidence, personified.
And copywriting fees are but a drop in the ocean when it comes to making your business-owning dreams a lucrative reality.
